Lupus / SLE (Systemic Lupus Erythematosus)
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune disease that can affect virtually any organ system, including the skin, joints, kidneys, brain, and blood. Lupus causes the immune system to attack healthy tissue, leading to inflammation, pain, and organ damage. The disease disproportionately affects women, particularly women of color.
You may qualify for clinical trials that provide Benlysta at no cost
Clinical trials may give you access to this treatment while helping advance medical research
Search TrialsInsurers require trial of hydroxychloroquine (Plaquenil) as foundational therapy, plus at least one immunosuppressant (mycophenolate, azathioprine, or cyclophosphamide) before approving biologics. For lupus nephritis, mycophenolate or cyclophosphamide are standard induction therapies before biologic add-on therapy.
Biologic therapy denied — must fail hydroxychloroquine and immunosuppressants first
Very Common
Benlysta or Saphnelo denied without documented moderate-to-severe active disease
Common
Insufficient serologic documentation (ANA, anti-dsDNA, complement levels)
Common
Off-label rituximab denied for lupus nephritis
Occasional
Disease activity scoring (SLEDAI) not documented
Occasional
