Lupus / SLE (Systemic Lupus Erythematosus)

Affects approximately 200,000–300,000 people in the U.S.; 9 out of 10 are women·5 treatments

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune disease that can affect virtually any organ system, including the skin, joints, kidneys, brain, and blood. Lupus causes the immune system to attack healthy tissue, leading to inflammation, pain, and organ damage. The disease disproportionately affects women, particularly women of color.

Insurers require trial of hydroxychloroquine (Plaquenil) as foundational therapy, plus at least one immunosuppressant (mycophenolate, azathioprine, or cyclophosphamide) before approving biologics. For lupus nephritis, mycophenolate or cyclophosphamide are standard induction therapies before biologic add-on therapy.

Biologic therapy denied — must fail hydroxychloroquine and immunosuppressants first
